ChristyFest™ to sponsor “Bling for Books” at Del Rio School

With the help of ChristyFest™ volunteers Del Rio Elementary School will host its second annual “Bling For Books” jewelry sale on October 25 and 26 in the school gym. For sale will be gently used costume bracelets, necklaces, earrings and pins with some sterling and gold estate and vintage jewelry included.

ChristyFest™ is an annual festival which celebrates Christy the novel by Catherine Marshall along with the TV series and movies. Each year cast members, producers, writers, directors and crew from both productions come to ChristyFest™ to share memories, mingle with fans and enjoy the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains where the TV Series was filmed. The festival explores related material such as mountain crafts, herbal medicines, music, history and early mountain culture. Events and presentations feature nationally known experts in a variety of subjects of interest to Christy enthusiasts. Each year the festival was held in Townsend, Tennessee, but in honor of the 100th birthday of Catherine Marshall, the festival was held in Del Rio, the actual site of the Christy Mission and the inspiration behind the novel’s fictional Cutter Gap.

Last year’s sale raised over $6,000 for the school library. ChristyFest™ supported the school’s efforts by asking for donations via their Facebook site and asking their volunteers to collect jewelry for the sale. Over 4,300 pieces were donated. Donations came in from 42 states. This year’s funds will be used to purchase books and materials for the library and for educational enrichment opportunities for the students.

Donations of jewelry are gratefully accepted at the school or can be mailed. The address is Del Rio Elementary, 500 Hwy. 107 S, Del Rio, TN 37727. All donations must be in good repair and have no broken or missing pieces.

If you would like to donate items, please go to the website and download the form to be included with your donation.

Del Rio is located 11 miles east of Newport on Highway 25/70. The school is located down Highway 107, in the heart of the Del Rio community.
