In a previous article, it was reported that Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto was in talks to portray The Joker in David Ayer’s (“Fury,” “End of Watch”) upcoming DC Comics movie “Suicide Squad.” It will be based on the titular comic’s storyline of a group of supervillains forced into performing dangerous missions as penance for their crimes against humanity. With news from Warner Bros, it has been confirmed that Leto will in fact play the “Jester of Genocide” in the new film. However, Warner decided to go a little further than passing on that one single nugget to the public. On Tuesday, the entire cast of the film was announced, certainly a star studded company.
Standing by Leto’s side as the Joker’s lover, fighter and right hand woman, Harley Quinn will be depicted by Margot Robbie, famous for her role in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Joining the power couple will be Cara Delevingne (“Anna Karenina”) as Enchantress, a very powerful magic user, Tom Hardy (“Bronson,” “The Dark Knight Rises”) as Rick Flagg, a general who is the tactical head of the Suicide Squad. Hardy is now the first person to portray two different characters in DC Universe films.
Rounding out the cast are Jai Courtney (“Divergent,” “Jack Reacher”), an Australian actor playing Captain Boomerang, and the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” himself, Will Smith, will be longtime Batman villain Deadshot, one of the deadliest assassins in the world. No news was announced if Jesse Eisenberg will show up in the film as Lex Luthor yet, but it is assumed that he will show up following his appearance in “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Production on “Suicide Squad is set to begin in early 2015 for an August 5, 2016 release.
