KNOXVILLE (press release)—Local author Vince Vawter will read and discuss his debut novel “Paperboy” Sunday, October 19, 3 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center.

Set in Memphis in 1959, the novel deals with the challenges of stuttering and growing up in the segregated South. Much of the book is based on Vawter’s own childhood experiences. “Paperboy” is a 2014 Newbery Honor Book.

Vawter retired after a 40-year career in newspaper editing and publishing. He served as the managing editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel from 1988 to 1995.

The Vawter author event is sponsored by Friends of the Knox County Public Library and the East Tennessee History Center.

Teachers, librarians and speech therapists have been invited as special guests at this event.
