KODAK (press release)—A Newport man is dead and a Sevier County woman is in critical condition after a shooting Sunday night in Kodak. Sevier County Sheriff Ron Seals said that a call came into 911 from 4004 Bent Road in the Kodak community at 10:10 p.m. The caller stated that two persons had been shot.
The first officer arrived at 10:14 p.m. and found a deceased man in the living room apparently from a gunshot wound to the head. He was later identified as Browning Burgess, 69 of 157 County Path Rd, Newport. Officers then found Audrey M. McCroskey, 46, who was semi-conscious and had sustained a gunshot wound to her face, in a bedroom at the rear of the home. A witness, who was present in the home at the time of the shooting, told investigators that Burgess was an estranged boyfriend of McCroskey and that he had come to the residence approximately 30 minutes before the shooting. According to reports, the witness told investigators that Burgess and McCroskey had engaged in a verbal altercation and that Burgess had gone to rear of the home, shot the victim, returned to the living room and turned the gun on himself.
Burgess had an active temporary order of protection taken out by the victim on Oct. 15, 2014 and was due in court Monday. McCroskey was transported to UT Hospital via Lifestar where she was listed in critical condition. The investigation is continuing at time of release. The shooting was the second domestic shooting in Kodak within a month.
