FROM STAFF REPORTS
SEVIERVILLE—Six people are facing charges, accused of stealing more than $80,000, including money raised for a Sevier County boy fighting cancer.
A Sevier County grand jury indicted David Way, Justin Tarbett, Sherry Metcalf, Scottie Ownby, Janie Allen and Tracey L. Justus on a total of 51 charges.
Officers say the group broke into Bluff’s Restaurant in Sevierville in December after a fundraiser for 11-year-old Preston Gentry who is battling leukemia. Officials say they came in through the attic and took more than $14,000 from a safe.
The six are also charged with taking more than $60,000 from the home of Gatlinburg City Commissioner Jerry Hays as well as $10,000 in tools, jewelry and cash from another home.
Because they allegedly planned the crimes as a group, they are also charged with conspiracy.
Several were already in jail on other charges.
