Tanger Outlet Malls struck a blow against cancer Friday morning with a generous donation of $30.539.07 to Relay for Life. The money was raised through the sale of coupon books with the proceeds earmarked for charitable organizations.
“We sold $5 coupon packs here at the mall to raise this money,” said Angela Harness, general manager at Tanger Outlet Malls. “People look for the coupon books every year. And it really makes a difference.”
Tanger has supported cancer research since 1994. In the past year the 43 Tanger Outlet Malls across the U.S. and Canada have donated $1.3 million for cancer research. In the past 20 years the Tanger Corporation has collectively donated $14.8 million.
Relay for Life is associated with the American Cancer Society. RFL uses contributions to provide support, education and awareness programs and to aid in funding research. The American Cancer Society celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013. RFL is now in its 30th year. In recent decades researchers funded by the ACS have made significant strides in the battle against cancer.
“In the past 20 years the survival rate for cancer patients has increased by 20 percent,” said Kayla Shelby, of Relay for Life. “We are working every day to end cancer.”
RFL supports cancer victims by providing wigs, hats, make-up, emotional support and funding for research in the hopes that one day in the not-too-distant future cancer will be relegated to the pages of medical history books.
