The University of Tennessee will play the the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl on Jan. 2. 2015 in Jacksonville, Fla. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:20 p.m. The game will be the Vols 50th bowl game appearance.
The Vols will be sailing into uncharted waters as they take to the gridiron. The team has experienced a drought in bowl appearances since 2010. Their last postseason victory was during the Phil Fulmer era. Fulmer led the Vols to a 21-17 victory over Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl. In 2009, Head Coach Lane Kiffin led the Vols to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in which they were disappointed with a 14-34 loss. Kiffin left UT after one season and was replaced by Derek Dooley who took the Vols to the Music City Bowl in Nashville where they fell to North Carolina in a 30-27 overtime loss.
Tennessee is currently ranked #5 in the Southeastern Conference East Division. The Vols finished the regular season with a 6-6 overall record and a 3-5 record in conference games.
Iowa finished the regular season with a similar record winning seven of 12 games overall and posting a 4-4 record in the Big Ten Conference. The Hawkeyes are ranked #4 in the Big Ten Western Division.
Tennessee secured bowl eligibility after a hard fought 24-17 victory two weeks ago.
