KNOXVILLE (press release)—Once again the Memorial Stairclimb returns to Knoxville’s iconic Sunsphere. Participants will climb the stairs of the Sunsphere and surrounding steps equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center honoring the 343 FDNY Firefighters who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 while saving the lives of hundreds of people. The event will be Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Knoxville Sunsphere.
The public is encouraged to attend this free memorial to support those climbing. Participants will be visible from the ground as they climb the 27 floors of the Sunsphere. At this event, some firefighters choose to climb in full bunker gear which weighs approximately 75 lbs.
“This is an opportunity for us all to remember those who gave their lives on September 11 and recognize the service and dedication of all of our emergency responders,” stated Mayor Madeline Rogero.
All proceeds from this event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Their mission is to provide educational resources to help prevent line-of-duty deaths for first responders.
Registration for participants is exclusive to first responders 18-years-old and up.
